Explore the history of Cogswell’s Grant as a working farm from the seventeenth century to the present. Although the last owners, Bertram and Nina Fletcher Little, used the property as a summer home and filled the farmhouse with their collection of antiques, they continued to operate the farm and enjoy its produce year-round. Walk through fields and down to the marsh, discover the story of the families that lived and farmed here, and learn how coastal farming has evolved over the centuries.

With 165 acres of grasslands, salt marshes, and woodlands, Cogswell's Grant is a treasure trove for birders. Join the staff of Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center for an introduction to the wide variety of species and habitats on the farm. In mid-May, many breeding birds such as Bobolink and Baltimore Oriole have already returned to fields and forests to nest, while many others are still migrating through the area en route to their more northerly breeding grounds. During a leisurely walk, explore the many aids to field identification, identify birds by their vocalizations, and discuss breeding behavior. Please bring binoculars. Coffee and refreshments will be served, and the house will be open to participants for a brief tour.
