About the Retreat Center

The Essex Retreat Center's property is set in a beautiful, peaceful place and is tucked amidst 18 acres of white pines and oaks, less than a mile from the ocean and surrounded by 250 acres of conservation land. Menus are healthy, wholesome and abundant meals with vegetarian options. All meals are prepared by our Executive chef and professional food service staff.

While we feel you will be pleased with the accommodations, we want to make sure that you know this is a rustic retreat center - not a spa. A place to think and breathe in nature, eat wholesome food, and a chance to get to know your fellow students by sharing two (or three) to a room and three to a bathroom. A limited number of Sunday arrivals and single rooms are available for an additional fee. Contact Meg for details. Who Would Benefit from the Bootcamp

  • ScrumMasters, Agile Project Managers or Iteration Managers well versed in the agile basics and who have experienced an agile team. You must have actual experience to benefit from the bootcamp because we use your real life experiences throughout. We suggest at least 6 months’ experience.
  • Experienced ScrumMasters, Agile Project Managers or Iteration Managers who have had years of experience.
  • Agile Coaches who want increased facilitation and coaching skills and the results they can provide.
  • Any experienced agilist interested in bringing more rigor and structure to their facilitation of Agile ceremonies and other collaborative events.
  • Any experienced agilist who wants to help people and teams achieve the changes it takes to use agile well.

The Agile Facilitator  You asked for it, we listened. We are SO excited to be offering a facilitation class that will help you professionally facilitate the Agile practices for your teams. We partnered with two great facilitators – Leslie Stein and David Chilcott – to design a course that fulfills industry requirements for becoming a qualified Agile Team Facilitator. This two-day course requires day and evening class time to cover what you need and allow you plenty of time to practice and get feedback. Here’s the full course description.

Coaching Agile Teams To meet the full requirements of a comprehensive Agile coaching curriculum, we expanded our flagship Coaching Agile Teams course to 3 days. We offered the 3-day version, and students raved: don’t shortchange us with only 2-days! Finally, we can say this is a truly comprehensive course for Agile coaches. Here’s the full course description.Certifications

  • The Bootcamp is accredited by the International Consortium for Agile (ICAgile) as fulfilling all Learning Objectives in the Team Facilitation & Agile Coaching track.  After successful completion of the Bootcamp, you can apply for ICAgile Professional continuing education certifications in Team Facilitation and/or Agile Coaching, provided you meet ICAgile's prerequisites. Learn more at ICAgile.
  • The Bootcamp is also approved by the Scrum Alliance and yields 37 SEUs toward your Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) or to support your existing Scrum Alliance certifications, such as the CSM. Learn more at the Scrum Alliance.
  • Any learning in Agile is typically acceptable to the Project Management Institute as continuing education. The Bootcamp yields 37 PDUs that you can claim toward your PMI-ACP or to support your existing PMI certifications, such as the PMP. Learn more at the PMI.

Integral Agile Wizardry Bootcamp - Boston area

Integral Agile Wizardry: Mastering Self, Seeing Organizational Systems

A Five-Day Intensive for Committed Agilists

Topics | Who Would Benefit | Prerequisites | Outcomes | Foundational Models | Our Instructors | Cancellation Policy

Integral Agile Wizardry is a five day bootcamp intensive for experienced Agilists and Leaders, helping them begin down the path of Integral Systems practice and spiral wizardry. The Bootcamp is highly experiential, interactive, and will focus significantly on your personal growth. It is designed to dramatically increase your overall effectiveness in the enterprise Agile coaching and transformation space, starting with a basic premise of, first, do no harm.

The primary goals of the Bootcamp are two-fold: to do advanced work in developing the Self (meaning you) as the primary instrument of enterprise transformation, and to introduce the multi-dimensional Integral Agile perspective for systems and organizational change work. A significant pillar of this model is the notion of becoming an Integral Agile Wizard, someone facile in working at all altitudes of the spiral of development, helping to catalyze appropriate organizational change as an authentic servant leader.

The Integral Agile approach attempts to do justice to the quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.”  It is an approach that is unique in the field and is the most in-depth and comprehensive introduction to the Integral Agile concepts and practices available.Topics

Integral Agile Wizardry is unlike any conventional training. It starts with the premise that we ourselves are the most important instrument of change. Therefore, we have designed modules for each of the five days to exercise and develop the Self: in relationship, in systems, and internally (including work in facilitated small groups, meditation and shadow work).

Each day has an overall major content theme, corresponding to the four Integral quadrants: Leadership (psychology), Competencies & Practices (behavior), Organization Architecture (Systems), and Culture. Specific topics include:

  • Day 1: Your Self in Systems (Leadership Circle debrief, Reactive vs. Creative, Integral development, perspective taking at altitude)

  • Day 2: Is Your Organization up to IT? Competencies and practices that create success with Agile in a range of cultures

  • Day 3: Systems Thinking: Advanced, Agile-consistent Organizational Patterns & Sttures

  • Day 4: Culture, Change and Relationship (emergent properties of relationship in systems)

  • Day 5: Your Self in Action: Holistic Seeing, Conscious Action in the Enterprise

Who Would Benefit from the Intensive
  • Agile Champions in charge of an Agile transformation initiative at the organization level

  • Current Enterprise Coaches wishing to expand their skillsets and effectiveness

  • Experienced Agile Coaches who are committed to growing into the Enterprise Coaching space

Additionally, this intensive is for you if:

  • Your Agile organizational transformation effort is experiencing difficulty or dissatisfying results

  • Your SAFe or other Agile scaling initiative is floundering or not living up to expectations

  • You have tried many things and you keep experiencing “one step forward, two steps back.”

Prerequisites

This is decidedly not a beginning or even intermediate agile class, but rather an advanced one for people committed to their own personal and professional growth in the service of human and organizational transformation. As such, acceptance is by application (please see below) so that we can assure participants meet the prerequisites, as well as taken at least one of the following classes: You must have taken either Coaching Agile Teams, Agile Coach Bootcamp, or Managing Agile Environments.  Specific prerequisites include both prior experience as well as pre-Bootcamp activities:

  • 3-5 years experience with Agile in progressively complex organizational environments, including management or coaching responsibility for full programs and/or organizational units.

  • If you are a coach, you should be grounded in Agile Coaching, such as having attended Agile Coaching Institute or other advanced course(s), having obtained an ICAgile Certified Professional-Agile Coaching or ICAgile Expert, a Certified Scrum Professional, or equivalent. If you are in management, you should have experience leading organizational change initiatives.

  • Prior to the workshop, we will arrange for you to complete The Leadership Circle 360 rating tool (itself a $500 value). This requires you to invite 10 or more professional colleagues to assess your leadership behaviors. You will be debriefed on your results during the workshop.

  • Come to the workshop with a focal system to work with, either an enterprise, organizational unit, or full program or release train (a single team or two is not sufficient).

Outcomes the Class Will Produce

While mastering agile coaching skills will require both time and practice, our class will allow you to:

  • Understand and utilize the Integral Agile framework

  • Gain a greater understanding of your functional level of development and the individual growth areas that will take you to your own next level

  • Connect deeply to a community of practitioners who share a similar commitment to human transformation

  • Be introduced to and start practicing new techniques appropriate to each Quadrant

  • Get your own results from the most advanced 360-feedback instrument available

Foundational Models
  • Integral Agile & the Integral Operating System

  • ICAgile Enterprise Coach learning objectives

  • Select ICF Professional Coach Competencies

  • ACI’s Agile Coaching Competency Model, especially Transformation Mastery

Lyssa Adkins

Since 2004, I have taught Scrum and Agile Coaching to well over a thousand students, coached many agile teams, and served as master coach to scores of apprentice coaches. In both one-on-one settings and small groups, I enjoy a front-row seat as remarkable agile coaches emerge and go on to entice the very best from the teams and organizations they coach. With ACI, I have had the pleasure of training over 2,000 people in the skills and mindsets of great agile coaching. Prior to agile, I had more than fifteen years of expertise leading project teams and groups of project managers (I was even a PMO Director — twice!), yet nothing prepared me for the power of agile done simply and well. I believe that agile is more than an alternate project management methodology and I am passionate about deepening the roles in agile – specifically agile coach and agile manager – to help agile move into its fullest expression. I hold an alphabet soup of certifications: Certified Scrum Coach (CSC), ICAgile Expert in Agile Coaching (ICE-AC), SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), Project Management Professional (PMP), Six Sigma Green Belt (SSGB), Organization and Relationship Systems Certified Coach (ORSCC) and Associate Certified Coach (ACC). I am also a trained Co-Active Coach and Leader. In 2010, I authored Coaching Agile Teams: A Companion for ScrumMasters, Agile Coaches, and Project Managers in Transition.

Michael K. Spayd

In a word, my professional work is about transformation. I have found that I am wired to help people–and systems–change. I am drawn to cutting edge ‘technologies’ for coaching and developing organizations, leaders and teams. As an organizational change coach and consultant for 20 plus years, I have worked with Fortune 1000, small businesses and non-profits. For 13 years I have specialized in large-scale Agile transformation, working with numerous organizations, leaders, and scores of teams.

My training as a Team and Organizational Coach created a foundation for my approach, plus training in executive coaching, organizational behavior, organization change and consciousness transformation. A Co-Active leadership program was particularly influential in my own leadership journey, and in coaching others on theirs. Formal credentials include Certified Organization and Relationship Systems Coach (ORSCC), Certified Professional Facilitator (CPF), ICAgile Expert in Agile Coaching (ICE-AC), SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM). I am currently working on a book in the Mike Cohn series called Coaching the Agile Enterprise. An excerpt of that book, introducing the Integral Agile framework, was released in January 2014.

Michael Hamman

For most of the past 25 years, I have committed myself to the possibility that the workplace be a site for personal, professional and social transformation. Trained early on in coaching and large group facilitation with Werner Erhard and Associates, I went on to train in systems thinking, facilitation, organization development, and leadership development with Peter Senge, Peter Block, Thomas Leonard, Otto Laske, Marvin Weisbord, and with the Leadership Circle. For 12 years I developed software, and coached and trained software teams in the beauty of design and teamwork.

This rich variety of background and training informs a unique approach to coaching agile teams and organizations that strives to see the whole system. Over the last ten years, I have coached dozens of Fortune 500 companies, leaders and teams toward greater holistic agility. In the process I have helped hundreds of people develop their own capacity for agile leadership and practice. Currently, my principle focus is in the areas of adaptive leadership and organization agility. I am working on a PhD in human and organizational development at Fielding Graduate

University. I am Director of Agile Leadership Training & Development for ACI.
