Essex History Revealed Through Photographs

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Local authors Dawn Robertson and Kurt A. Wilhelm publish new book on Essex’s past

With the first boat being built in 1660, Essex thrived off of the shipbuilding industry and developed into one of the largest producers of fishing schooners in the country.

In a new book by local authors Dawn Robertson and Kurt A. Wilhelm, over 200 vintage photographs reveal a microcosm of American culture and growth, telling the story of leading patriots, entrepreneurs, Civil War heroes, and hardworking everyday citizens.

The authors hope the book will “let readers pause and reflect on America's previous way of life while absorbing a new cache of stories and facts.”

Highlights of Essex:

•Features never-before seen historic photographs from the Dana Story Collection and other private collections

•Orients the reader to the various sections of Essex by clippings from David Choate’s 1853 map of Essex and aerial photographs

•Showcases town teams, school classes, fire companies, military units and other group photographs

•Provides an outline on how the town developed

The profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum.

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Heritage Area Photo Safari featuring Tamron
With a state-of-the-art digital camera in hand, capture magnificent views of the Great Marsh, the Essex River, the back of Crane Beach, and Castle Hill and Choate Island from the Cox Reservation! You'll be equipped with all the latest camera gear from Tamron, provided by Hunt’s Photo & Video, and personally coached by Hunt’s technical experts and visiting professional photographers, as you ready to photograph The Cox Reservation. The Cox Reservation consists of two parcels: a four-acre woodlot and the 26-acres of upland, salt marsh, farmland with house and barn, and river frontage. Its location on the Essex Bay estuary makes the Cox Reservation a rewarding place for natural history observation. Shorebirds feed on the mud flats at Clamhouse Landing, and herons, egrets and kingfishers take advantage of the abundant food source of the salt marsh. The old hayfields surrounding the house and barns are home to bobolinks, meadowlarks, and also support the activity of bluebird boxes and osprey platforms. Reservations required.
